How to make a 3D printed name desk organiser

The Pro desk organiser turns a name into the front and outer profile of a practical pen or tool holder. Its compartments follow the lettering instead of sitting behind a plain rectangular box, and the lettering exports separately for simpler colour printing and glue assembly.

Start with the organiser template

Open the Name desk organiser template, then replace SOPHIE with the required name. The template starts with three compartments and a bold uppercase font, which gives the organiser a stable outline and clear lettering.

Choose a suitable name and font

Bold uppercase lettering is the safest starting point. Letters with long descenders can make the front profile extend below the rest of the organiser, while very thin or decorative strokes can leave weak sections. Check the front and underside in the 3D preview before exporting.

Set the useful depth

Organiser depth controls how far the holder extends behind the name. Measure the pens, brushes or tools that it needs to hold, then confirm that the finished depth fits the printer bed. The exact finished-size controls show the resulting dimensions in millimetres.

Arrange the compartments

Choose one, two or three compartments. For two or three compartments, move the divider positions so each section suits its contents. Keep enough space between dividers for the widest item and use a practical wall thickness for the intended load.

A compartment that looks wide in the preview may narrow around parts of the letter outline. Check the full cavity from above before printing.

Check the printable body

Rotate the preview and inspect the front, sides, cavities and floor. The body should be closed, the compartment floor should be continuous and the dividers should meet the shaped outer walls. The printability panel will also flag bed-fit and thin-feature problems.

Export the body and lettering

Desk organisers are a Pro feature. The split-STL pack, 3MF and production pack keep the organiser body and front lettering as separate parts. The body contains a shallow locating recess so the lettering can be printed flat in another colour, dry-fitted and glued into place.

Slice it floor-down

The export places the organiser body on its floor and the lettering flat on the build plate. Inspect both parts in the slicer, use at least three walls for a durable holder and confirm that no support has been added inside the compartments. Print a small test if the lettering fit is critical.

    Measure the intended contents and keep the finished model within the printer bed.

    Pick one, two or three sections and position the dividers around the items they will hold.

    Check the body, cavity floors, dividers and shaped outer walls in the 3D preview.

    Use the split-STL, 3MF or production-pack export to keep the body and inset lettering separate.

    Print the body floor-down and the lettering flat, dry-fit the recess, then glue the lettering in place.
