How to design and 3D print a lightbox sign

A printed lightbox needs more than deep lettering. It needs a hollow body for the lights, a clean illuminated face, parts that locate properly and a way to reach the wiring later. The Pro lightbox designer builds those printable parts from your sign.

What the lightbox export contains

The model is split into a hollow body, a front frame, a light-diffusing panel, a face mask and an optional rear cover. The front frame has a 3 mm locating skirt that pushes into the body, while the wider bezel stops against the front edge. An internal ledge stops the rear cover from sliding too far into the shell.

Choose Desk or Wall mode

Lightbox construction is available in Desk and Wall modes on Pro. Desk mode can use the printed base if you want a counter light, but the base remains optional. Wall mode puts the chosen mounting recesses into the removable rear cover.

Use bold lettering

Each raised text or shape layer becomes an illuminated opening. Bold lettering leaves enough material around the cut-outs and gives the diffuser a clear shape to light. Use auto-fit for a long name, then check that every opening stays inside the front panel.

The illuminated text colour controls the diffuser preview. For the physical print, use white or natural translucent filament and let the LED colour provide the light.

Set the body and panel fit

Body depth controls the space available for LEDs and wiring. Panel fit clearance starts at 0.15 mm per side, but printers and filaments vary. Print a small fit test or a shortened section before committing to a large sign, then adjust the clearance if the panels bind or feel loose.

Inspect the assembly before exporting

Move the Assembly view slider towards Exploded to separate the rear cover, body, light face and front panel in the preview. This changes only the view. The export still places the loose front parts flat beside the body for slicing.

Plan the LEDs and cable route

Set the cable notch to suit the wire route before printing. The app creates the enclosure, not the lighting system, so use a suitable low-voltage LED setup and follow the LED and power-supply manufacturer鈥檚 instructions. Check heat, cable strain and access before closing the rear cover.

    Select Lightbox under Sign construction. Lightboxes are a Pro feature.

    Enter bold text and check the fit

    Raised layers become illuminated openings, so keep the strokes clear and fully inside the front panel.

    Set the body depth and cable notch

    Leave enough room for the intended LEDs, wiring and connector.

    Choose the body, frame and diffuser colours

    A dark body and frame with a white or natural diffuser is a practical starting point.

    Check the panel clearance

    Start with 0.15 mm per side and adjust for your printer after a small fit test.

    Use the exploded preview

    Confirm how the front skirt, diffuser, body and rear stop fit together.

    Export, slice and test the assembly

    Inspect every part in the slicer, print a fit test, then install and test the lighting before final assembly.
